Miter Saw

This lesson presents the compound miter saw as an effective, productive, accurate, and portable power tool for the job site.

Saw adjustments and blade reference and how they affect different aspects of the cut will be covered.

Information related to parts of the tool and how the different features affect the way it is used.

  • Students will learn the proper way to carry, set up for use, and tear down to transport a miter saw
  • Students will learn the different parts and features of a miter saw and how they affect the way
    the tool works 
  • Students will understand the difference between a miter and a bevel setting and the pros and
    cons of each 
  • Students will learn the concept of blade kerf and how to compensate for it when making an accurate cut
  • Students will demonstrate the proper use of a miter saw and techniques that lead to safe and accurate cuts

Circular Saw

This lesson presents the circular saw as the most portable and versatile power saw on the job site.  The two main types of circular saws will be explained and compared.

Parts of the saw, their adjustments, and how each affects different aspects of the cut will be covered 

Safety concepts that protect the user from injury will be emphasized.

  • Students will learn the parts and features of a circular saw and their adjustments
  • Students will understand the difference between a direct and worm gear saw, how they operate, and the pros and cons of each
  • Students will grasp the concept of blade kerf and how to compensate for it when making an accurate cut as well as alignment and safe cutting strategies for a circular saw
  • Students will demonstrate the proper use of a circular saw and techniques that lead to safe, accurate, and straight cutting

Reciprocating Saw

This lesson presents the reciprocating saw as a portable and versatile power saw on the job site for certain cuts in various materials.  The purpose of a reciprocating saw will be explained and compared to other power saws.

Parts of the saw, their adjustments, and how each affects different aspects of the cut will be covered.

  • Safety concepts that protect the user from injury will be emphasized
  • Students will be able to identify circumstances when a reciprocating saw can be useful for cuts
  • Students will learn the reciprocating saw parts and features of a reciprocating saw and their adjustments
  • Students will learn about blades for this power tool, variations as to tooth count and tip materials, and other aspects like blade length and thickness
  • Students will demonstrate the proper use of a reciprocating saw and techniques that lead to safe, accurate, and controlled cutting
